“Deep in View”, Cola | The duty

From the ashes of the beloved Montreal group Ought is born Cola, which offers a more nuanced and delicate approach to post-punk that clashes at first listen. Singer and guitarist Tim Darcy’s characteristically outspoken tone seems less feverish and more resigned here; the rhythm section also has a different attack, with bassist Ben Stidworthy now teaming up with drummer (and multi-instrumentalist) Evan J. Cartwright, collaborator of US Girls and Weather Station. It is no longer a project that seeks to impose itself on the biggest stages, even in its more resourceful songs (Gossamer, Fulton Park), we even dare to qualify the project as chamber punk in the service of a gloomy vision (the musicians themselves affirm it) of our consumer society. However, the pleasure to derive from this first album grows with use, whose rich and rough sound of the guitars and the realization echo the depth of the texts. Give several listens to Deep in View before falling under his discreet charm.
