Steven Spielberg regrets the impact that his film jaws could have had on the significant decrease in sharks in the oceans.
In interview with the BBC as part of the program Desert Island Discsthe director said he regretted that his cult 1975 film, based on Peter Benchley’s book, caused so much fear and resentment over sharks.
Nearly 50 years later, the population of sharks has dropped dramatically in the oceans. Spielberg asserts that jaws undoubtedly contributed to the rise of shark fishing out of sheer bravado, which saddens him.
During his interview, Spielberg also recounted how the master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock (and a mechanical breakdown of a fake shark) inspired him with the idea that people would never see said sea animal during jaws.
