Quebec electronic artist Debby Friday won the prestigious Polaris Prize on Tuesday, awarded to the best Canadian album of the year, for Good Luck.
The singer and songwriter therefore leaves with the reward, granted without regard to sales, musical genre or commercial affiliation, which is accompanied by a $50,000 scholarship.
Born in Nigeria, Debby Friday grew up in Montreal, where she began her musical journey. She then lived in Vancouver before settling in Toronto. His urban music presents industrial sounds.
The jury, made up of 11 members of the music media, chose Ms. Friday from among the 10 finalists who were revealed last July. We notably found the Montreal composer and DJ Gayance, for her album entitled MasqueradeOji-Cree artist Aysanabee for Watin and R&B singer Daniel Caesar for Never Enough. Singer Feist for Multitudes, hip-hop duo Snotty Nose Rez Kids for their album I’m Good, HBU? and the rock group Alvvays for Blue Rev were also among the selected artists.
The group The Sadies was also on this list for Colder Streamsjust like musician Dan Mangan for his publication Being Somewhereas well as the singer Begonia and her album Powder Blue.
The gala for the 18th edition of the Polaris Music Prize took place this year at Massey Hall, a historic hall in Toronto, and not on the Carlu stage where the event had been held since 2013.
In the last decade, several Quebec artists have gotten their hands on the Polaris, such as Pierre Kwenders in 2022, Backxwash in 2020, Kaytranada in 2016 and Godspeed you! Black emperor in 2013.
