The man accused of the murder of Quebecer Victor Masson, in Mexico, in May 2023, was found guilty of homicide on Tuesday.
Mario Omar Sanguinez Lopez will return to court in a week to receive his sentence which could reach 30 to 40 years in prison, according to Radio-Canada.
The attorney general of the state of Oaxaca announced the arrest of the man about two weeks after the discovery of the body of Victor Masson, in the seaside town of Puerto Escondido, on the Pacific coast.
Aged 27 and originally from the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region, Victor Masson was found dead in his car on May 15, 2023 in this neighborhood where tourists usually stay.
According to a prosecutor’s summary of the facts at the trial, Victor Masson went alone to a restaurant-bar while his girlfriend from Mexico attended an event with people she knew.
The investigation revealed that he had met four people there. When paying the bill, an argument broke out between the victim and the other people present.
After leaving the establishment, Victor Masson called 911 to report that it had been stolen. He was found dead the next day.
