Death of Shemseddine, attack on Samara… The executive on the defensive in the face of the multiplication of news items

The government says it wants to “act at the first sign” after the latest attacks on teenagers. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal promises an interministerial plan in the coming weeks to fight against violence at school. But in the meantime, the executive is groping.

How to respond to ultraviolence? This is the challenge for the government after the tragedy of Viry-Châtillon or the attack on Samara in Montpellier. Each time, teenagers are involved and these news stories make the government fumble.

There is no “no explosion of violence” insists the Ministry of the Interior, but rather a media phenomenon and according to the executive, a succession of news items. But this news poses a political risk: allowing the impression of a deleterious atmosphere to grow in the country. A dangerous feeling, two months to the day before the European elections.

Reassure parents and teachers

“It is our responsibility to do everything to reassure parents and teachers,” judges a strategist, hence Emmanuel Macron’s call for school to remain a sanctuary. An interministerial plan must be announced in the coming weeks to combat violence at school with several avenues: disciplinary advice from primary school and a ban on mobile phones at school in particular. “We give the impression that teachers would be left to their own devices, that national education would be a no man’s land, but no!” annoys a ministerial source.

As it stands, it is therefore a question of reassuring, while recognizing the difficulty in truly protecting. Fatalist, an advisor concludes: “There have always been kids lynched or attacked when they left school. And it’s sad to say, but there always will be.”.
