Death of Kelly Meafua (31): the rugby player under the influence of alcohol and hard drugs before drowning

It is a tragedy that has done a lot of harm to all rugby fans. On May 7, Kelly Meafua died after a drunken evening with several friends. The 31-year-old Samoan, who had been living in France for several years, had perfectly acclimatized to his adopted country and he was a happy man and father of three children. His partner Kelly is also expecting a new child and the Montauban club, where he played, has also set up a kitty to help him financially.

On the evening of her death, Kelly Meafua apparently jumped from the top of a bridge in the Tarn and her body was found on the bank a few hours later. After inquiry and investigation, it was revealed that he drowned as a result of his fall in the water. It therefore remained to know the state of the rugby player at the time of the facts and the toxicological analysis has just fallen. According to information from the prosecution, the latter had consumed a large quantity of alcohol and cocaine the night before the tragedy.

Tests revealed he had 2.34 grams of alcohol per liter of blood

“The analyzes revealed that he had 2.34 grams of alcohol per liter of blood (note, the limit for driving is 0.5 grams per liter). For cocaine, depending on the rate, the consumption is a few hours before the drowning, well after the end of the match”, Montauban prosecutor Bruno Sauvage told AFP. Elements that can partly explain the drama that took place during this night since Kelly Meafua was coming out of a great victory for his club Montauban and had decided to celebrate it with his teammates.

After spending a good part of the evening in a nightclub in downtown Montauban with two friends, he jumped from Pont-Vieux, which is 22 meters above the water, on the blows from 6 o’clock in the morning. “By challenge, it is a personal and voluntary gestureaccording to testimonies and video surveillance images”, reveals the prosecutor. The case was dismissed for lack of violation.
