The world of motorsport is in mourning. This Wednesday, January 3, 2024, René Metge, icon of the Dakar rally and distinguished driver, died at the age of 82. The sad news was announced by our colleagues at France Blue, leaving the motorsport community in a state of shock, especially since this disappearance occurs a few days before the start of the 46th edition of the Dakar.
Devastated by the death of the man who was Johnny Hallyday’s co-pilot in 2002, Adriana Karembeu took to her social networks to pay him a last tribute. “RIP… we will miss you dear René”she notably wrote in an Instagram story while sharing a photo of the deceased posted online on the @africaecorace account.

Rain of tribute for the racing driver
“AFRICA ECO RACE is an orphan since this Wednesday, January 3, 2024, our René METGE passed away. An essential figure in Cross-Country Rallies since the creation of the discipline, he was one of the founding pillars of this great African Rally.indicates the rally-raid.
And to add: “But beyond that, he was the patriarch of our great AFRICA ECO RACE family. René was 82 years old. This exceptional driver and immense organizer has handed in his last card. He will leave a big void in the community of motor sports and in our hearts. The final gesture of this man with a big heart for whom friendship was stronger than anything is to have asked to be buried after the finish of the Rally.
