Who hides behind the myth? On August 16, 1977 at the age of 42, Elvis Presley died, entering into legend after having been an icon during his lifetime. Forty-five years after his disappearance, the image of the adored man has however experienced cracks, with shocking revelations about his private life and in particular during his relationship with Priscilla, his wife from 1967 to 1973.
Before saying yes to the star Elvis, Priscilla had already known the man for a few years. Vanity Fair had returned to the underside of the singer’s love story with the one who was only a child when they first met. Indeed, Priscilla Beaulieu met him in Bad Nauheim in Germany in 1959: she was barely fourteen. The interpreter of Love Me Tender is in Europe for his military service welcomes him in his residence after an interview arranged with the approval of his mother by one of the King’s friends, Currie Grant.
During this visit, the young Priscilla spends several hours in the bedroom of the man who is ten years older than her. They see each other regularly, between school during the day and interviews in the evening, at Elvis’s. “It was during his military service. My parents took me to his house. He was 24 years old. I was very shy, not at all the type of girl to scream at a concert. He made me sit next to him and asked me lots of questions: ‘Are you going to school? Where ?’ I was so nervous, I didn’t know what to say to her. He went to the piano, began to sing to put me at ease“, she confided to the Huffington Post US.
Thinking she had been boring, the future Mrs. Presley was invited back: “A few days later, we received a call: he wanted to see me again. I didn’t understand, I had been so boring (laughs). We talked a lot about music… At the end of his service, six months later, he invited me to follow him to GracelandIt was the start of an idyll which obviously shocked no one and which would bring little Priscilla to the altar. Seven years after their meeting, Presley proposed to Priscilla Beaulieu in marriage shortly before Christmas 1966. The wedding ceremony took place in the couple’s suite at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas on May 1, 1967. Their only daughter, Lisa Marie, was born on February 1 of the following year.
