Gérard Larcher, president of the Senate and senator LR des Yvelines, was the guest of “8h30 franceinfo”, Tuesday January 23, 2024. A woman dies in a road accident at a point of farmers’ blockade, the bill which aims to including abortion in the Constitution arrives in Parliament… He answered questions from Salhia Brakhlia and Jérôme Chapuis.

“Deep anger, fed up with the agricultural world”

Reacting to the road accident which left one dead and two injured at a farmers’ roadblock in Pamiers (Ariège), Gérard Larcher ensures that his “Thoughts go first to this woman who died“. “Faced with this tragedy, it is important that answers be provided to the agricultural world very quickly”adds the President of the Senate“There is a deep anger, a fed-up with the agricultural world. There is a kind of overdose of complexity”, he summarizes. A car fatally struck a farmer, seriously injuring her husband and teenage daughter.

To prevent a tragedy like that of Pamiers from happening again, should we evacuate the roads blocked by farmers, such as the A64? “It is up to agricultural managers to have the necessary discussions with the Minister of the Interior. They are responsible men and women”replies Gérard Larcher.

“I don’t think that abortion is threatened in our country”

The President of the Senate Republicans does not want the right to voluntary termination of pregnancy to be enshrined in the Constitution. “No, because I do not think that abortion is threatened in our country”, he justified. The examination of the bill which should lead to the inclusion of abortion in the registration will begin on Wednesday.

Gérard Larcher specifies that, for him, “the Constitution is not a catalog of social and societal rights” and that’“there are already a number of decisions from the Constitutional Council” which guarantee abortion. “If abortion were threatened, believe me, I would fight for it to be maintained.”
