In the United States, the deaf and mute players of the American football club the Cubs have made their handicap a strength. Their team made history by advancing to the finals of the California Junior Championship.

The Cubs American football team practices at the High School for the Deaf and Dumb in Riverside, California (USA). The story held America spellbound for a year. Usually despised, the deaf-mute team set out to string together victories at the California Junior Championship, beating all of their hearing opponents game after game. The team even qualified for the final, a historic first. The crowd of deaf-mute fans grows under their banner. “It’s a historic moment, which shows that when you have the will, when you set a goal, you get there”confides an admirer.

If the team was beaten in the final, the coach, also deaf-mute, retains the strength of the symbol of his journey. “I had shivers of emotion, I am extremely proud of them”, says Keith Adams. To get this far, the players have trained hard. If during the matches, they cannot rely on any vocal instructions to coordinate themselves, they have made a strength of their handicap. “Sight is how we interact with the world. So our players observe and analyze every detail”, explains Dominic Turner, player of the Cubs. The young athletes have now returned to the classroom, but are actively preparing for the next season of the championship.
