“Deadpool & Wolverine” had a better-than-expected Sunday. The comic book movie earned $211 million in its opening weekend in North American theaters, Disney announced Monday.
That’s $6 million more than what was estimated Sunday, putting “Deadpool & Wolverine” in a different league. It had already broken the record for a movie that was rated R-rated.
But the Shawn Levy-directed film, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, now has the sixth-highest opening weekend of all time, surpassing Jurassic World (Jurassic World) which opened at US$208.8 million in 2015.
Walt Disney can now claim five of the six biggest box office openings ever, without adjusting for inflation, including two films Avengers (Endgame / Final phase And Infinity War / The Infinity War) and two films Star Wars (The Force Awakens / The force awakens And The Last Jedi / The Last Jedi).
The only exception is the film that holds second place, Spider-Man: No Way Home (Spider-Man: No Return), from Sony and produced by Marvel Studios.
The outperformance of Deadpool & Wolverine also brought its overall figure to US$444.3 million, surpassing Avatar: The Way of Water (Avatar: The Way of Water).
