In the aftermath of the shooting that left one dead and one injured in Anjou Thursday evening, police are still at the scene of the crime while the neighborhood is worried.
“Of course that’s not reassuring. 7 p.m. is not midnight. Normally, I come back from school at this time, ”says 19-year-old Carl-Étienne Dessureault. The student in multimedia integration techniques at Cégep de Maisonneuve lives right next to the place where a 20-year-old man was killed Thursday evening.
At around 7:15 p.m. Thursday, police officers from the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) were called in for shots fired in the east end of Montreal. The event took place on Place Cointerel, near the corner of rue de la Roseraie.
A 20-year-old man, Hani Ouahdi, was found in a vehicle with severe gunshot wounds. He was taken to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, Thursday night to Friday.
A second 17-year-old was also in the vehicle at the time of the shooting. Wounded in the upper body, he fled the scene and asked for help in a nearby business, on Boulevard des Galeries d’Anjou. He was taken to hospital and his health is stable. This second victim was known to the police and is collaborating in the investigation.
Few details were released regarding the motive for the assaults. The major crimes division of the SPVM is responsible for shedding light on the events.
“His eyes were already gone”
A neighbor living on Place Cointerel told Press to be shocked by the events. “We heard gunshots. My partner is a doctor, so he went out for CPR [réanimation cardiorespiratoire], but he saw that it was the end, she describes. He saw that his eyes [de la victime] had already left. ”
This neighbor filmed part of the emergency services intervention. She claims to have seen at least one person run away. The tragedy worries the young mother, who often returns to work at the time when the events took place. “What time do we have to be home to be safe?” She wonders.
Several neighbors told Press that they consider that their neighborhood is safe and that it is an isolated event. On October 13, 2021, an attempted murder with a gun took place in Anjou, on Jarry Street, north of the Metropolitan Expressway, according to a newspaper article. Metro. This area is, however, far from the quiet residential streets where the victim was found on Thursday.
Thursday’s event brings the number of homicides perpetrated on the territory of the SPVM to 32 in 2021.
