Krypto made his first appearance alongside the Man of Steel in a DC Comics comic book in 1955, and has since been seen numerous times on TV and in movies. He even starred in the animated television series Krypto the Superdog, in 2005 and 2006. Endowed with substantially the same powers as Superman, since he too comes from the planet Krypton, he is super-powerful and he flies. He wears his red cape and necklace with pride, also driven by a strong sense of duty.

The imposing Dwayne Johnson, one of the animated film’s co-producers, lends his voice to the valiant Krypto, who feels left out as Superman turns his attention to Lois Lane, whom he wants to marry. But that’s not the only problem the superdog has to deal with. Collateral victim of a Machiavellian plan, he finds himself in an unusual situation of vulnerability, like DC’s most famous superheroes, whether Superman (John Krasinski), Batman (excellent Keanu Reeves), Wonder Woman (Jameela Jamil), Aquaman, The Flash, Green Lantern and Cyborg. This is also one of the strengths of this comedy, to show superheroes in a different light.

Kevin Hart (Jumanji, Central Intelligence) gives a lot of character to the dog Ace, who is waiting to be adopted at a pet store along with the squirrel Chip, the sow PB and the century-old tortoise Merton. Their companion is the diabolical Lulu (fantastic Kate McKinnon), a guinea pig with great ambitions, who uses her scientific knowledge to collect kryptonite (the main weak point of Superman and Krypto) and create mutant recruits, capable of overpowering superheroes. During the operation, the four accomplices accidentally obtain powers and will help Krypto save his master and his precious allies.

There’s a lot of humor and heart in this computer-animated film from Warner Bros. Pictures, directed and co-written by Jared Stern. Intended for the whole family, it highlights the strength of friendship, as well as the privileged relationship between pets and those who adopt them. Fans of Dwayne Johnson movies should stick around until the very end of the credits so you don’t miss a thing.
