Three days after the death of Dominique Bernard, a literature teacher killed in a knife attack in a high school in Arras (Pas-de-Calais), students, parents of students and teachers gathered throughout France in the schools, Monday October 16.

For the first time since the murder of Dominique Bernard, literature teacher, Friday October 13, students, their parents and teachers passed through the doors of the Gambetta high school, in Arras (Pas-de-Calais), Monday October 16. “My nights were very painful, I saw the images all the time, even if I did not see the scenes in front of me”, confides a student. A mother says she had to go to sleep with her daughter. Some leave a message, or a flower, in memory of the one many consider a hero.

“It’s thanks to him that we’re still here”

“It’s thanks to him that we are still here, because he had the courage to intervene”, says a student. All middle and high schools in France observed a minute of silence on Monday. In an establishment in Créteil (Val-de-Marne), the Marseillaise resonated, sung by students. In the afternoon, the Prime Minister followed the minute of silence in the Conflans-Sainte-Honorine establishment (Yvelines) where Samuel Paty worked. The funeral of Dominique Bernard will take place on Thursday.
