(Innsbruck) Germany came from behind to defeat Great Britain in the Davis Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday night after Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz won the decisive doubles match.
The German duo defeated Britons Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski 7-6 (10), 7-6 (5) in this best-of-three clash, after two singles matches.
Daniel Evans gave the British a lead by defeating Peter Gojowczyk 6-2, 6-1, but Jan-Lennard Struff brought the two countries back to square one by beating Cameron Norrie 7-6 (6), 3-6, 6-2.
Germany have won the Davis Cup on three occasions, but not since 1993. They make the semi-finals for the first time since 2007, and will face the winning country on Saturday in the match between Sweden and the Russian team. Croatia will cross swords with Serbia or Kazakhstan in the other semi-final.
The match took place behind closed doors at the OlympiaWorld Arena, due to the confinement decreed in Austria to fight against the upsurge in the number of coronavirus cases in the country.
Madrid will host the remainder of the Davis Cup finals.
