Davis Cup Finals: Canada know their rivals ahead of rotating tournament

Canada will begin the defense of its Davis Cup title by taking on Italy, Sweden and Chile in the Tournament Finals rotation next September.

Tennis Canada made the announcement in a press release on Wednesday morning.

This part of the Davis Cup Finals will take place from September 12 to 17 and will therefore begin two days after the end of the United States Open, the last Grand Slam tournament of the season.

Defending champion but also holder of the first rank in the world ranking, Canada will be the favorite of group A and will play its matches at the Unipol Arena, in Bologna, Italy.

Helped by strong performances from Montreal’s Félix Auger-Aliassime, Canada won the Davis Cup for the first time in its history last November, in Spain.

After losing his first match of the rotating tournament to South Korean Kwon Soon-woo, Auger-Aliassime won his next five matches, including a duel against Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, who had just won the States Open. United States and climb to the top of the world rankings.

During the final stage of the tournament, Auger-Aliassime had won his three matches, against the German Oscar Otte, the Italian Lorenzo Musetti and the Australian Alex de Minaur without conceding a single set.

Second in the world, Australia will play in Group B against Great Britain, France and Switzerland. The matches will take place in Manchester, Great Britain.

Group C will bring together Spain, third in the world, Serbia, the Czech Republic and South Korea. The duels will be played in Valencia, Spain.

In Group D, whose matches will be played in a city to be chosen in Croatia, the Netherlands, the United States and Finland will battle the Croatians, who are ranked fourth in the world.

The top two teams from each group (by number of wins, then percentage of matches and games won/lost) will advance to the final stage of the tournament, November 21-26, in Malaga, Spain.
