(Turin) Croatia became the first team to reach the Davis Cup semi-finals after beating Italy 2-1 on Monday.
While there was a win on either side, Mate Pavic and Nikola Mektic beat Fabio Fognini and Jannik Sinner 6-3, 6-4.
Sinner replaced Simone Bolelli after winning her singles match, which lasted almost three hours.
But he and Fognini couldn’t get a break point against Pavic and Mektic, winners of Wimbledon and the Olympics this year.
Champion in 2005 and 2018, Croatia will face Serbia or Kazakhstan. This quarter-final will take place on Wednesday in Madrid.
Borna Gojo surprised by winning 7-6 (2), 2-6, 6-2 against Lorenzo Sonego.
Gojo, 279e at ATP, closed a 1-4 shortfall in the first set against Sonego, 27e.
Ranked 10 in the world, Sinner then beat Marin Cilic 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3, in front of a fiery crowd.
The other quarter-finals will be England against Germany on Tuesday in Innsbruck, as well as Russia against Sweden on Thursday in Madrid.
