Canada qualified for the Davis Cup playoff stage when it faced Chile in its final group stage match in Bologna on Saturday.
The maple leaf team qualified thanks to a victory by Alexis Galarneau over Alejandro Tabilo, 6-3, 7-6 (5).

Canada only needed one victory in the three matches against Chile. The maple leaf formation is at the top of Group A with a 2-0 record.
“First and foremost, it’s another chance to win the title. Furthermore, this proves that it was not a fluke last year and we should not be taken lightly. We are number one in the world, so we didn’t want to disprove this ranking and I think that’s what we’re doing at the moment,” Galarneau said in a press release on Saturday.
The 24-year-old athlete also enjoyed a second singles victory this week as he defeated the 38th racket in the world, Lorenzo Sonego, in two sets of 7-6 (8), 6-4 against the ‘Italy.
Diallo lowers the flag
In the other singles duel of the day on Saturday, Gabriel Diallo was not able to allow his country to obtain a perfect record during this phase of Group A.
The Montrealer lost in two identical sets of 6-4 against the 22nd player on the planet, Nicolas Jarry.
Jarry dominated his rival in service with a harvest of 10 aces against three, in addition to having put into play 78% of his first serves. Additionally, the Chilean broke Diallo on two occasions.
Galarneau and Pospisil win in doubles
Galarneau and veteran Vasek Pospisil finished the week in style with a 6-3, 7-6 (7) doubles victory over Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera and Alejandro Tabilo.
The Canadian duo managed four aces compared to three for their opponents. In addition, Galarneau and Pospisil won 78% of the points on their first service attempt.
The Davis Cup playoff stage will take place from November 21-26 in Malaga, Spain.
Canada is also the reigning champion of this competition.
