Data centers: the American company Vantage invests $900 million in Quebec

The American company Vantage Data Centers will inject nearly $900 million for the construction of a new data center in Pointe-Claire and the expansion of its campuses in Quebec and Montreal.

“Quebec is an ideal location for data centers because of green and affordable energy, the quality of our fiber optic network, our cool climate and a business-friendly environment,” said Maxime Guévin. , vice-president and general manager of Canadian operations.

On Thursday, Vantage management organized a press conference in the Capitale-Nationale to announce these next growth targets.

All of the approximately $900 million in investments will come from private pockets. Management estimates that its new projects will generate additional revenue of around $30 million per year for Hydro-Québec and will allow the creation of 150 direct jobs in these regions.

In Pointe-Claire, a new $300 million data center (QC6) is currently under construction. The opening of the site is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2022. Other phases could be carried out.

In Montreal, the company still wants to gain weight by expanding its campus (QC4) by 94,000 square feet. This new $240 million phase, which should be completed by the end of the year, will eventually have a load capacity for customers of 48 megawatts (MW).

Vantage also has facilities in the Quebec Metropolitan Technology Park, in Quebec City. Management revealed on Thursday that it had acquired eight acres of land near its building to continue its growth.

The development of this site, the cost of which is estimated at $320 million, will be partly financed by Société Générale, a European bank which offers financing options linked to sustainable development indices.

Over $1.7 billion since 2019

Vantage, a hyperscale data center provider, has been in Quebec since 2019. The Colorado company then grabbed $259 million for Videotron 4Degrés Colocation data centers.

The following year, it swallowed Hypertec data centers in addition to completing the purchase of various land and buildings across the province.

With its new investments of $900 million, Vantage will have injected more than $1.7 billion across the province and will eventually have four sites totaling a capacity of 143 MW.

Vantage, which is committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2030, also has facilities in Europe, Asia, Oceania and Africa.
