Unsurprisingly, Dany Meloul officially succeeds Michel Bissonnette as vice-president of French Services at the public broadcaster. Radio-Canada made the announcement on Friday.
In her role, she will oversee all activities of the public broadcaster in French, on television, radio and on digital platforms.
Dany Meloul has been acting since October, following the surprise departure of Michel Bissonnette. A respected producer in the television industry, Michel Bissonnette served as number two at the state-owned company for more than six years. His departure had all the air of a dismissal. The differences between him and Catherine Tait were public knowledge.
Depending on what The duty learned at the time, the former vice-president of French Services was opposed to the idea of Radio-Canada undergoing the same cuts as CBC. After his departure, management finally made equivalent cuts within the French and English networks. In total, 600 positions will be eliminated at CBC/Radio-Canada during the year, or approximately 10% of the workforce.
It is in this difficult context that Dany Meloul officially takes office. The latter arrived at Radio-Canada in 2019 as general director of programs, replacing Dominique Chaloult. A lawyer by training, Dany Meloul was not predestined to have a career in the television industry. She first worked at Alcan. She then joined the legal services of Transcontinental, then Astral, which was later purchased by Bell Media. She was promoted to vice-president of programming for French-language television before leaving for Radio-Canada.
