Daniil Medvedev offered himself, Friday, January 28, a place in the final against Rafael Nadal, after a victory (7-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1) against Stefanos Tsitsipas. The Russian made the difference on his service games, except during a rather incredible second set, concluded by an altercation between the player and the referee. He therefore finds the final in Melbourne, as in 2021.
The first set foreshadowed an intense duel. Concluded in the tie-break (7-6) this round saw the Russian dominate on his services, with 91% (21/23) winning points on the first ball and 100% (8/8) on the second serve. With five shutouts…
The Greek reacted quickly, coming back to score in the second set (6-4), taking advantage of numerous opposing faults. Enough to irritate the Russian and make him skid, seeing his old demons arise again. At the end of the set, Medvedev thus lost his nerves by getting angry with the referee, receiving a warning at the same time. Reason for his wrath: the incessant coaching of Tsitsipas’ father.
But the world No. 2 has been working for several years with a mental coach to correct his concentration swings. A paying job, as he quickly recovered to win the third set (6-4), committing far fewer faults and regaining his efficiency on services.
In the fourth set, Daniil Medvedev broke from his opponent’s second service game. The Russian then went to the end (6-1) to validate his ticket and win the right to challenge Rafael Nadal in the final of this Australian Open.
