It’s one of those tough, rough and physically grueling matches that Daniil Medvedev loves. The Russian, led two sets to zero by a serious and convincing Alexander Zverev, gradually turned things around to finally beat the German in five sets (5-7, 3-6, 7-6, 7-6, 6-3 in 4h18), in the semi-final of the Australian Open, Friday January 26. He joins Jannik Sinner in the final, who achieved the feat earlier of taking out the master of the place, Novak Djokovic.

However, his rival’s enterprise of frustration never came close to working. Daniil Medvedev has long endured the aggressive blows of the world No. 6, invigorated by his victory against Carlos Alcaraz in the previous round. Trailing two sets to zero, the Russian stayed in the match, managing his emotions and continuing to play the German to never allow him to relax.

Little by little, his grip tightened: he pocketed the next two tie-breaks, little by little nibbling into the head of the German who perhaps already saw himself in the final against Jannik Sinner. The break at 4-2 in the last round completed the Russian’s gradual demolition tactics. He reaches the final in Melbourne for the third time after 2021 and 2022, and this time is aiming for a successful outcome to offer himself a second Grand Slam after the 2021 US Open.
