At the setting sun, with the steep, green mountains of Dominica in the background, dozens of boats took to the sea to pay tribute to the Quebec couple of Daniel Langlois and Dominique Marchand, allegedly murdered last week.

- The bodies of Quebec businessman Daniel Langlois and his wife Dominique Marchand were found in a charred car last Friday in Dominica, in the Caribbean.
- Daniel Langlois’ neighbor, American Jonathan Lehrer, as well as a man identified as a hitman by police authorities were arrested the next day and are now charged with the crime.
- Coming to Dominica for the first time in 1997, Daniel Langlois founded a self-sufficient hotel complex with his partner, the Coulibri Ridge Ressort, which officially opened in 2021.
Moved to tears, employees dressed in burgundy polo shirts bearing the image of the Coulibri Ridge Resort, the self-sufficient hotel complex founded by the couple, placed flowers on the calm water of Soufrière Bay from two motorboats.
Alongside them, around twenty smaller boats – kayaks and paddle boards – were placed in a circle, “a symbol of the community of Dominica and the resilience of this exceptional couple”, explained Simon Walsh, of the REZDM Foundation (Resilient Dominica Project).
Aux alentours de 16 h 30, les occupants de ces petites embarcations ont levé leurs pagaies dans les airs à l’occasion d’une minute de silence en l’honneur du couple disparu dans d’atroces circonstances quelques jours plus tôt.
« Au vu des circonstances tragiques entourant le décès du couple, cette cérémonie est plus qu’un hommage à deux citoyens très appréciés et engagés dans la communauté dominicaine », pouvait-on lire dans un communiqué émis par l’organisme, en collaboration avec La Fondation Daniel Langlois et le Coulibri Ridge Resort.
« Cette veillée nous permettra de nous rassembler, au-delà des mers, afin de pleurer des êtres d’exception », poursuit le texte.
« Ils donnaient le meilleur d’eux »
À quai, une chorale aux chanteurs vêtus de noir entonnait « Halléluia » aux participants à leur retour à terre, le tout retransmis en direct en ligne.
Quelques minutes plus tard, la nuit tombait. Les participants se sont alors munis de chandelles et ont entamé, en cortège, une marche à travers le village jusqu’à une autre plage où un immense feu de joie signifiant « la fin du passage sur terre », selon ce qu’a mentionné l’animatrice, a été allumé.
Jointe au Québec, d’où elle a écouté en ligne l’entièreté de la cérémonie en compagnie d’un autre ami du couple, François Girard, l’ex-attachée de presse de Daniel Langlois, Sylvie Deslauriers, a confié qu’ils ont « pleuré comme des bébés » tout au long de l’évènement.
Elle ajoute par ailleurs être « peu surprise » par la foule de locaux attirés par la cérémonie en l’honneur des deux ressortissants canadiens qui, « partout où ils passaient, donnaient le meilleur d’eux ».
« Ce monde-là [les habitants de la Dominique] got the best of them. So I understand that they want to share all that,” she emphasizes, recalling that the small island community only has around 75,000 inhabitants.
The community of Dominica would also have plans to rename a school on the island in honor of the couple, she said.
This ceremony was held the day after the appearance of Jonathan Lehrer, the owner of a former colonial estate neighboring Daniel Langlois’ hotel, who was accused of the double homicide at the same time as an alleged accomplice, Robert Snider.
The police theory is that he came to help Jonathan Lehrer eliminate his neighbors, with whom the latter was in conflict.
