Dangerous skid | Joe Veleno suspended for five games by the IIHF

Joe Veleno has been suspended for five games by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) for his actions against Nino Niederreiter.

The decision fell the day after the offence. In the second period of the game between Canada and Switzerland at the World Hockey Championship, the Red Wings player skated directly on the ankle of his opponent, in a battle for the disc along the ramp.

Veleno’s skate blade came just above Niederreiter’s skate.

The gesture had not been punished on the sequence, but it had been strongly deplored on social networks.

The 23-year-old has collected five points in five games since the start of the tournament.
