Dane Holger Rune, 18th in the world, beat defending champion Novak Djokovic 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 in the final in Paris on Sunday and won his first Masters 1000 tournament at the age of 19.
Rune was playing his fourth final in as many tournaments: he had lost in Sofia, won in Stockholm and lost again in Basel. After winning the first tournament of his career in Munich in May, he won his third and most beautiful titleboth by the prestige of the tournament and that of the opponents eliminated: after saving three match points in the first round against Stan Wawrinka, he beat five members of the World Top 10: Hubert Hurkacz (10th), Andrey Rublev (9th), Carlos Alcaraz (N.1, abandonment), Félix Auger-Aliassime (8th) and Djokovic (7th).
