Bridges, roads, homes… Storm Philippe caused damage in Guadeloupe. No injuries were reported on Tuesday October 3.
In Guadeloupe, violent storms and downpours fell all night from Monday to Tuesday October 3. In the south of the island, roads were transformed into torrents by the rains and surprised motorists were forced to abandon their cars. The inhabitants are helpless in the face of the power of water. When they woke up, the Guadeloupeans discovered the damage. A bridge partly collapsed and many trees were uprooted, while 2,500 homes were deprived of electricity and sometimes water.
End of red vigilance in Guadeloupe
A supermarket employee was stuck with customers. In the southern end of the island, the river overflowed and dumped tons of mud and rocks, as it did during Storm Fiona a year earlier. “We are dealing with phenomena that are repeating themselves (…) in relation to Fiona, there were no injuries, no deaths, people remained safe at home”, recalls Xavier Lefort, prefect of Guadeloupe. Storm Philippe is moving towards the northwest of the Caribbean and red alert is lifted in Guadeloupe.
