DeBoer, who guided the New Jersey Devils and San Jose Sharks to Stanley Cup Finals appearances in his first campaign with either organization, was fired after the Golden Knights missed the playoffs for the first time in their five years in the NHL.

He had been the head coach of the Golden Knights for two and a half years. He then replaced Gerard Gallant, who had led the Golden Knights to the Stanley Cup Final in their first year in the NHL, in 2017-2018, then to the playoffs in 2019.

The Stars reached the Stanley Cup Finals in the summer of 2020 with Rick Bowness as interim head coach before he was signed to a two-year contract that expired this season. In nearly three seasons at the helm of the Stars, Bowness has posted an 89-62-26 record with two playoff berths.

DeBoer will be the fifth head coach at Dallas since Jim Nill took over as general manager in April 2013. His predecessors have been Lindy Ruff, Ken Hitchcock, Jim Montgomery and Bowness

In a press release, Nill noted that DeBoer will come with a wealth of experience.

“Each team he took over not only showed immediate improvement, they proved to be ultra-competitive in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. […] His resume demonstrates the high standards he sets and his ability to lead his team to play at this level consistently. »

DeBoer will lead a fifth different NHL roster. He started with the Florida Panthers (2008-2011), continued with New Jersey (2011-2015) and San Jose (2015-2020), before ending up with Vegas.

In 1,015 regular season games in the NHL, he has a cumulative record of 513-379-123 as head coach. His 68-55 playoff record includes making the Finals with the Devils in 2012 and with the Sharks four years later.
