The French milk giant Candia will close two of its factories in France, located in Loire-Atlantique and Saône-et-Loire. Closures due to the drop in milk consumption in France, but also to the decrease in exports to China.

For nearly 100 years, the Candia factory located in Campbon (Loire-Atlantique) has been producing cartons of milk, but it will soon cease its activity. For the 160 employees, this announcement is a shock. “I have a feeling of disgust because I have experienced a factory shutdown before and that was part of Candia too. All the workers are stunned“, confides Patrice, an employee.

Another factory of the group located in Saône-et-Loire is also condemned. In total, the group cuts 316 positions throughout France. For the group, the problem comes from national sales, because the French shun milk: – 2% sold each year between 2013 and 2019. This is a trend that is confirmed with consumers. Plant-based soy and oat drinks continue to gain market share from cow’s milk. Candia prefers to invest in other more profitable products such as cheese or butter.
