The logistics subsidiary of French aircraft manufacturer Kodiak and TBM, Daher Aerospace Canada recently announced the layoff of most of its workers at its facilities on McArthur Street, in the borough of Saint-Laurent, in Montreal.

“Daher Aerospace Canada is at the end of its contract. The activity is going down until December 31st. The company is working on other contracts. This is why it is proceeding with the collective dismissal,” said Christian Bilodeau, business agent for the members of the machinists union at Daher Aerospace Canada, over the phone.

The company did not call back The Press.

The logistics division opened its doors in the Montreal region barely two years ago. In June 2021, a major recruitment campaign was set in motion with the aim of recruiting 100 more employees.

The initiative was the subject of an advertorial in the newspaper Subway at the time. We learned that Daher Aerospace Canada, which had opened its logistics center in 2020, had quickly hired a hundred people. The center’s mandate was to receive, handle and carry out quality assurance of aeronautical parts for an original equipment manufacturer (OEM). This was, according to the company, a recurring challenge among airlines and manufacturers.

The origins of the family business date back to 1863. Daher would be the 7e aircraft manufacturer in general and business aviation, according to its website. It also has an aeronautical equipment and systems division, which acts as a subcontractor for Airbus, Eurocopter, Boeing and Bombardier. The worldwide revenues of the company, which is headquartered in Orly, amounted to 1.1 billion euros (about 1.45 billion Canadian dollars) in 2021. The company is active in 13 countries.

A request for union certification for employees of Daher Aérospatiale Canada in Saint-Laurent from the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW), local section 712, was filed in February 2021. first employment contract has been in effect since July 2021.

The union had up to 150 members at Daher Aérospatiale Canada in Saint-Laurent.

Today, I don’t think there are 121 people left as we speak. We hope that Daher will win new contracts.

Departures will be staggered from August 12 to mid-December.

Retention bonuses were offered to employees to be able to complete the contract. “Most of the affected workers will move elsewhere quickly because of the dire labor shortages. It is not difficult to place people”, specifies the trade unionist.
