Dabrowski, Shapovalov and Auger-Aliassime lose doubles in Madrid

Canada’s representatives Gabriela Dabrowski, Félix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the doubles competition on Tuesday at the Madrid Open.

Ottawa’s Dabrowski and Brazil’s Luisa Stefani, seeded sixth, lost 6-4, 3-6, 10-5 to American favorites Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff.

The Americans had 13 break points and converted two. They conceded three and suffered a single breakage in a match that lasted 1 hour 20 minutes.

Later on Tuesday, Auger-Aliassime and Shapovalov lost 4-6, 6-2, 12-10 to fourth seeds Marcelo Arevalo and Jean-Julien Rojer.

The Canadians had nine aces, but committed six double faults, in addition to being victims of two breaks of service in four occasions.

Arevalo and Rojer avoided errors, not committing double faults and winning 79% of the points disputed when serving. They allowed only one break point, which they did not save.

The Lavalloise Leylah Fernandez is still in the running, she who plays this week with the American Taylor Townsend. They meet Hsieh Su-Wei and Barbora Strycova on Wednesday in a quarter-final match.
