Dabrowski clinches doubles title in Chennai

Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Brazilian playing partner Luisa Stefani won the women’s doubles title on Sunday at the Chennai Tennis Open.

Dabrowski and Stefani, the favorites in the doubles tournament, easily beat Russia’s Anna Blinkova and Georgia’s Natela Dzalamidze 6-1, 6-2 in 58 short minutes on Indian cement.

This is the second title for the Ottawa doubles this season, after winning the Masters in Madrid in May. Dabrowski, who is 30, also got 12e career women’s doubles title.

Blinkova and Dzalamidze beat Montreal’s Eugenie Bouchard and Belgian Yanina Wickmayer in the semifinals.

At the end of the day, the Czech Linda Fruhvirtova surprised the Polish Magda Linette, third seed of the tournament, 4-6, 6-3 and 6-4 in the final. It was the first title for the player aged just 17, who is at 130e world rank.
