Cyréna Samba-Mayela is gaining momentum before Paris 2024, and in what way! The hurdler broke the French 100m hurdles record on Saturday April 20 during the Diamond League event in Xiamen, China. Cyréna Samba-Mayela signed a time of 12.55, a hundredth better than the historic mark of Monique Ewanje-Epée and Cindy Billaud, established respectively in 1990 and 2014. Thanks to this new record, she took third place in the race, only a tenth behind the reigning Olympic champion, Puerto Rican Jasmine Camacho-Quinn.

The world indoor champion in the 60m hurdles in 2022, already holder of the French record for the distance which she lowered during the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow last March, confirmed her progress in the 100m hurdles this season . Author of her personal best in Gainesville on April 13, in 12″65, Cyréna Samba-Mayela went a tenth faster on Saturday, despite almost zero wind (-0.2m/s).

The 23-year-old athlete had chosen to join the United States in 2023 to best prepare for the Paris Olympic Games. Here she is now with the seventh best world performance of the season. Another tenth removed, and she would climb onto the podium of the best times of 2024. On Saturday, she was only beaten by Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, defending champion from Tokyo, and by the Bahamian Devynne Charlton (12″49) , who beat her in Glasgow for the 60m hurdles world title last March.
