Cyclone Belal: Mauritius hard hit

Streets transformed into a river, and many cars trapped. Hard hit by Cyclone Belal on Monday January 15, Mauritius had not anticipated the extent of the rains. In one street, a human chain was even organized to face the current. Everything changed in the morninge, when Cyclone Belal deviated from the trajectory predicted by meteorological agencies to approach the island.

The moderate alert then became a direct threat. Since then, torrential rains and violent winds have hit Mauritius. The emergency services are overwhelmed, like police officers forced to abandon their vehicles and flee the floods in a garbage truck. But the worst is perhaps yet to come: Belal is due to approach even closer to the coast on Tuesday morning, raising fears of a worsening of the situation. The human toll, of at least one dead, remains uncertain.
