Two days after the death of a 66-year-old cyclist, struck by the driver of a dump truck in the Villeray district, Valérie Plante reiterated Thursday that the Trudeau government must “legislate” to equip all heavy trucks with side bars protection.
“It reminds us that the road must be shared. The concept of security must be a priority. […] And to be quite honest with you, I do not understand the reluctance of the federal government to legislate so that on the entire Canadian network, we can put sidebars. It costs $ 2000, put some. It is not complicated and it is not that which will make that there will be no more trucks which will roll ”, hammered the mayoress during a press briefing on the sidelines of the ceremony of the day of. Memory.
She says she expects that the municipalities “can move forward” soon, so that “all the trucks that circulate on the territory are better equipped” to avoid accidents.
“As a population, we need to realize that the most vulnerable are real. Pedestrians, cyclists, they are more vulnerable. When we put a cycle path, that’s why we do it, it is to save lives ”, she said, recalling having demanded at the beginning of 2021 that all companies obtaining contracts of the City – especially for snow removal – are equipped with side bars.
His request is not new. For several years now, the mayor has been calling for Ottawa to take action on the sidebars issue. In the meantime, Mme Plante recalls that his administration is leading a pilot project to install cameras on trucks “in order to have better visibility”.
” The machine is working ”
Four days after her re-election, the head of Projet Montreal also assured Thursday that she had already started the procedures to appoint the next elected officials who will carry the main issues such as housing, the environment or public safety. “Tuesday, we had a first caucus, a first team meeting with the winners, but also with the losers. And already, we are starting to have discussions for the executive committee. The machine is on, ”she said.
His team says he is “considering” at least two recounts in the coming days. The first would be in Outremont, where the mayor of Ensemble Montréal Laurent Desbois won by only 23 votes over Philippe Tomlinson. “Were there any anomalies? We are really studying the different corners with Elections Montreal, ”said the mayor.
“In Tétreaultville too, it’s tight enough to be considered,” she added. It was advisor Suzie Miron who escaped the election by just over 40 votes, against Julien Hénault-Ratelle from Denis Coderre’s team.
We still do not officially know if the latter will remain leader of the opposition, even if everything seems to indicate that he will not remain so. Note: recently, the name of Chantal Rossi – who was the running mate of Denis Coderre – appears as “elected” on the site of Ensemble Montreal, which suggests that the former candidate for mayor will soon leave. Mme Plante reiterated Thursday that he expected Mr. Coderre “to appear in front of the population in order to explain or, at least, share his decision”.
