Three years ago, the government promised to put in place a “bicycle plan”. Its use should also triple by 2024. But when pedaling becomes synonymous with love of risk, the development of cycling is slowed down. In some municipalities, the practice is clearly dangerous.

Every morning, Aurore Chesnay travels the eight kilometers to her workplace in anguish. This commuter who goes to Montpellier (Hérault) by bike fears an accident. On his route, there are no bike paths, and thousands of cars at rush hour. To ride a bicycle safely, you need constant attention.

There are 21% of cycle paths in Montpellier, but only 4% on the outskirts of the city. A considerable discrepancy which poses a problem. Making cyclists safer by improving roundabouts and building new trails outside the city: this is the promise made by Montpellier’s elected officials. In other cities, the tracks are even more sorely lacking: in Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône), there are only 3% of cycle tracks. However, the government aims to reach 9% of bicycle trips within two years.
