Computer attacks against video surveillance cameras connected to the Internet are becoming more and more frequent. Supposed to protect against burglaries, these cameras can help criminals prepare for them by giving them access to video feeds of the interiors.

Video surveillance cameras film live 24 hours a day, in apartments or businesses. Supposed to protect against burglaries, these systems can sometimes be hacked and become a gateway for thieves. Some models are sold commercially for around thirty euros. They are easy to install, but less secure than higher-end devices. Some sites divert the images from these cameras, allowing everyone to enter the privacy of their owners.

What to help prepare burglaries

“When you are going to install a camera at home, and you are going to connect it for example to your wifi network or that kind of thing, if you have not put the right configuration parameters, for example a password, the camera will broadcast for everyone on the Internet”, explains Sylvain Hajri, cybersecurity expert at Epieos.com. Video streams can therefore be consulted by people planning a burglary.

In a few seconds, a team of BZHunt specialists manages, with a simple computer, to neutralize the security system of a camera, of which the seller had nevertheless assured the France Télévisions teams that it was not hackable. The camera becomes blind, leaving the field open to thieves. According to BZHunt, the process can be repeated on any camera connected to a wifi network. These computer attacks are becoming more and more frequent. To protect against this, you can use a complex password or perform security updates.
