Two Italians were arrested on Monday April 24 by customs as they crossed the border from Switzerland to France with three million euros worth of counterfeit banknotes in their car, France Bleu Pays de Savoie reported on Wednesday April 26.
The two men in their fifties and sixties were arrested at the Thônex-Vallard post, in the town of Gaillard (Haute-Savoie). Customs officers discovered two suitcases filled with banknotes in the trunk of the car. In all, more than three million euros in counterfeit banknotes were discovered (only 30,000 euros were real or 1% of this “money”). According to France Bleu, these were rough copies including the inscription “facsimile”. According to investigators, the real banknotes were probably used to conceal the counterfeits.
The two individuals were then taken into custody. This Wednesday, they were placed in pre-trial detention and must now be tried in immediate appearance Thursday, April 27 before the court of Thonon-les-Bains.
