Curling World Championship | Brad Gushue remains undefeated in six games

(Las Vegas) Captain Brad Gushue’s Canadian team went undefeated in six games at the World Curling Championship on Tuesday with an 11-7 win over Germany.

Posted yesterday at 8:29 p.m.

The Canadians were down 5-1 after three sets against German team Sixten Totzek (3-3) when they opened the game to come from behind and improve their clean record to 6-0.

The Germans conceded late in the ninth end in which Canada scored three. It was Team Gushue’s third three-pointer in the duel.

By virtue of its 6-0 record, Canada sits firmly atop the round robin standings. The top six teams will qualify for the playoff round.

The first two formations go directly to the semi-finals. The next four teams must compete for the other two available spots. The medal round will take place on Sunday.

Gushue does not hide that the difficult ice conditions in the Nevada desert have led to funny scores as each stone thrown is unpredictable.

Ice conditions can cause even the most experienced player to make unexpected mistakes, leading to high-scoring innings and numerous run thefts.

Against Germany, Canada stole a run in the first end but then gave up five to find themselves in trouble at 5-1 after three ends.

Gushue, however, responded with three in the fourth to get back into the game, then took control with three more in the sixth.

“I felt like even at 5-1, we were lucky to be only 5-1,” Gushue said. I knew that if we could score two points, we would be back in the game. Fortunately, we had two sets of three. »

The Canadian quartet of Gushue, Mark Nichols, Brett Gallant and Geoff Walker, based in Saint John, Newfoundland and Labrador, is trying to win a second world title after the 2017 title, won in Edmonton.

The team lost in the final to Sweden’s Niklas Edin in 2018.

On Wednesday, Gushue’s Canada will face Edin’s Sweden in the morning before meeting Finland in the evening at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
