Previously known in Europe as the sports division of the SEAT brand, Cupra has recently become a brand in its own right in the European market.
The first model of this young brand is the Cupra Formentor, a compact SUV that could be compared to the BMW X2 or the Audi Q3.
The Car Guide was able to test this model on the roads of Finland. Here is what we thought of it.
A pleasant hybrid for everyday life
The Formentor is offered in a plug-in hybrid configuration with a turbocharged 1.4-liter engine, releasing 150 horsepower. When combined with its electric motor, the SUV achieves an output of 245 horsepower and a torque of 295 lb-ft. A 2.0-liter engine is also offered, generating 310 horsepower.
The model under test, the VZ hybrid traction version, uses a 12.8 kWh battery, making it possible to cover a distance of approximately 55 kilometers in electric mode.
The acceleration is sudden, but you can feel that the vehicle lacks grip slightly in the curves. However, this problem disappears if the all-wheel drive model is purchased. The Formentor can be recharged in 3.5 hours on a level 2 terminal and in 5 hours when plugged into a European home outlet.
An SUV with style
Among the horde of SUVs on the market, the Cupra Formentor stands out from the crowd with a frankly successful look.
The Formentor is 4.45 m in length and the interior space is sufficient, but far from spacious (which is not the goal here). The exterior and interior styling is refined and is very well presented. The build quality of the materials inside is simply stunning. The screen on the driver’s front is 10.2 inches while the central control screen is 12 inches. The infotainment system is very simple and the control of the various functions is done without too much complication.
The interior is downright stylish, minimalist and technological. The steering wheel has a truly sporty look and seeks to remind us that we are not in a Volkswagen, but something more exciting.
We should also mention that another version of the Formentor, the Formentor VZ5 (with 390 horsepower) offers even more sporting characteristics, such as larger rims as well as four diagonal tailpipes at the rear. The bucket seats anchor the driver and passengers firmly, reminding us of the spirit of the Cupra brand.
In CUPRA mode
At SEAT, the Cupra mode is the equivalent of the Sport + mode. Once activated, the suspension becomes firmer, the vehicle noisier and more responsive to its surroundings.
To give us even more sensations, the Formentor amplifies the tone of the exhaust system via its audio system. Some might be disappointed with this aspect, however, in a world where the electrification of vehicles is a given, many manufacturers are trying to find a compromise regarding the sound of their vehicles. In addition, while the sound of the exhaust system is an important purchase criterion, consumers can still get the VZ5 version, providing a fantastic experience for audiophiles.
Cupra, come to Canada!
Right off the bat, the hybrid model will be perfect for those looking for an electrified compact SUV. The Formentor offers us a lot and surprised us.
For a price starting at € 44,863 in Finland, it is one of the most interesting hybrid SUVs out there. Do not jump on the phone too quickly, there are no plans for Cupra’s products to be marketed in Canada. That said, as this vehicle is part of the great Volkswagen family, maybe one day we will see its technology adapted to a North American model.
Stay tuned as it won’t be the last Cupra vehicle we’ll test drive!
