Their horror stories don’t often make the news, except when they lose their lives at the hands of an abusive partner. In the short documentary Aftermath, by Romane Garant Chartrand, women victims of domestic violence tell their stories without constraint within a speaking circle of the shelter where they found refuge and where they try to rebuild their lives. The sober and respectful presentation of their shared confidences on their journey of “liberation” from their attacker and on their perception of themselves makes them even more moving and enlightening.
