Crush and rage on the Croisette

Favorite: hello to the Iron Mask

The Croisette and the seaside are not pretty, pretty: too built up, too noisy. But on the 1st day of the Festival, we have time to go up to Le Suquet, the old village which surmounts the bay, well preserved with its narrow streets and vaulted passages. We stop in front of the 12th century tower where, according to legend, the iron mask took refuge after escaping from the fortress on Île Sainte-Marguerite. Its specter haunts the place, provides a plaque. This famous prisoner was, it seems, the twin brother of Louis XIV. We greet him by wishing each other a Happy Festival! He doesn’t say a word. Nevermind !

Rant: the failures of technology

Everywhere here, festival-goers grunt and sigh. The electronic ticket office, compulsory since last year to attend a screening, is not only badly designed, but when by some miracle you manage to connect, the interesting sessions are sold out. Here we are condemned to miss films. Above the bouquet, the Internet of the Palais des Festivals does not stop experiencing failures. Monday, a total blackout of five hours, Tuesday impossible connections for some Apple computers (mine, of course). Computers in Cannes are an air-conditioned nightmare. Grrr!
