Favorite: Ukraine again and again
While representatives of Ukrainian filmmakers do not put their anger behind the presence in competition of the Russian Kirill Serebrennikov with Tchaikovsky’s wife, yet a dissident, images of the savage invasion set the Palace ablaze. The documentary Mariupolis 2 of the Lithuanian Mantas Kvedaravicius, killed by the Russian army in Ukraine under the bombs last April, raised the emotions. In the martyr city of Mariupol, he captured scenes of war and daily life of the inhabitants fighting for their survival. The filmmaker thus becomes a symbol of resistance in Cannes.
Rant: TikTok called to order
Social networks are not always soluble in a festival like Cannes, when they disregard the elementary rules of ethics. Franco-Cambodian filmmaker Rithy Panh has resigned as president of the first jury of the TikTok Short Film Festival. He could no longer stand the undue pressure exerted by the darling social network of young people to control the game. “TikTok must understand that a jury is sovereign, he hammered. You can choose films, it’s called selection, choose the jury, but then you have to let them do their job. Ultimately, TikTok came to his senses and Rithy Panh changed his mind.
