Cross-country skiing | Katherine Stewart-Jones closes in on the top 20

Katherine Stewart-Jones moves one step closer to a first top 20 in the cross-country skiing World Cup this season. Sunday, at the 20 km mass start freestyle in Ruka (Finland), she was 22e to reach the finish line 2 min 2.4 s behind the winner.

The Quebecer thus obtains a result in the same waters as the day before when she was ranked 25e of the classic 10 km.

After the victories of Emma Ribon (classic sprint) on Friday and Ebba Andersson (10 km classic) on Saturday, the Swedes continued their domination in this first World Cup weekend thanks to Moa Ilar. She was ahead of the Americans Jessica Diggins (+0.3 s) and Rosie Brennan (+1.4 s).

In the men’s event, Antoine Cyr was the best Canadian for a second day in a row in Ruka. 27e in the classic 10 km the day before, the Quebecer ranked 36e with a delay of just under a minute and a half.

Olivier Léveillé (+1 min 51.3 s) and Léo Grandbois (+3 min 43.2 s) respectively finished 40e and 64e.

Norwegian Jan Thomas Jenssen won the first World Cup victory of his career. Jenssen was the only one able to follow the Czech Mical Novak who left the leading group on the final climb. Novak was then overtaken by the Norwegian just before the final straight and finished in second place less than a second later.

Harald Oestberg Amundsen (+2.1 s) won the bronze medal.

The action will resume next weekend in Gällivare, Sweden with 10 km freestyle and relay races on the program.
