We associate Italy and red wines. However, the Italians do everything! Red of course, but throughout the country, also whites, rosés and sparkling wines. And some of the most unique sparkling wines around.
Here is a perfect example: the 2019 Croci Gutturnio Frizzante, a sparkling, very dry and tannic red.
The Gutturnio appellation is in Emilia-Romagna, south-west of Piacenza. Made with Barbera and Croatina (locally called Bonarda) grapes, the wine opens with aromas of ripe red berries, with notes of undergrowth, tobacco, anise and a touch of animality.
With persistent bubbles, it is rather light, but a solid tannic structure gives it structure, relief, and appeals to the table. Authentic, rustic and so Italian.
Delicious with parmesan or cold cuts, it will also accompany Sardinian gnocchetti.
