[Critique] “Williams: Violin Concerto No.2”, John Williams, Anne-Sophie Mutter

This is the great dream of many composers of film music: consecration in concert halls. It is also now the great dream of performers: to achieve, through recognized names, a reconnection between the public and musical creation. After Across the Stars, rearranged film music, Anne-Sophie Mutter has finally obtained a real violin concerto from John Williams. In her concert music, Williams is more profuse and abstract. If the result is significantly above the Concerto for guitar by Howard Shore written for Miloš Karadaglić and premiered in Ottawa, Williams did not, however, achieve the “wow” work, the Concerto of Korngold or the 2e of Prokofiev of his time. Fortunately, there are many beautiful lyrical and energetic passages (impressive III), sometimes dreamlike (II), expert orchestral writing, a composition that pays homage to the strength of character of its dedicatee. Interesting work to discover, completed by the theme of The Long Goodbye, Han Solo and the Princess and Marion’s Theme.
