[Critique] “Wildness of Mirrors”, The Black Angels

The psychedelic rock band formed in 2004 in Austin, named after the Velvet Underground for their song The Black Angel’s Death Song, has just released a sixth studio album that perpetuates the band’s references to works by Lou Reed, John Cale and Nico. In the text first, if we rely on Wilderness of Mirrorswhich lends its name to the disc, and to A Walk on the Outsidetitles that respectively echo the words of I’ll Be Your Mirror and of Walk on the Wild Side, sure. And then there is also The Riverwhich, in addition to mentioning members of the Velvet, pays an unsettling musical homage to his distorted 1967 track Venus in Furs. But, far from presenting a pale copy of their illustrious idols for nearly 20 years, the Black Angels continue to make Black Angels, namely excellent modern psychedelic melodies increasingly tinged with garage sounds. Finally, they pull off the feat of putting their own discography in abyss, as is the case with Empires Fallingwhich responds to their previous Empire and I dreamt.
