[Critique] “Voices of the Wind”, Le Vent du Nord, Philippe Prud’homme and the Quatuor Trad

On the anniversary album 20 spring released in January 2022 is this gem of a song titled the inn. The lament a cappella stands out, the voice of the main singer, Nicolas Boulerice, carrying the text, dressed in the harmonies of his colleagues. It made you want to hear a whole album in this tone, but here we are served: on The Voices of the Wind, the orchestra revisits its repertoire at full throttle. The songs for piano (played by the excellent Philippe Prud’homme) and those of the Quatuor Trad (Marie-Pierre Lecault, Émilie Brûlé, Josianne Laberge and Sophie Coderre) were finely arranged by Olivier Demers. It’s of all beauty. The restraint of Louisbourg, the urgency of Letter to Durhamthe piano and the violins cadenced by the feet of the traditionalists, the richness of the orchestrations of the amusing Riton – It’s in Paris, the charm proposal. Above all, the album leads us to understand that our music, traditional Quebec music, also has the complexity and eloquence of great classical works.
