[Critique] “Ultra Truth”, Daniel Avery

British composer Daniel Avery not only pays tribute to his late friend Andrew Weatherall on Lone Swordsmanthat’s all Ultra Truth, his powerful fifth solo album, which recalls his creative spirit. In the eclecticism of rhythms moving from techno – the genre with which he has been associated since his famous first album Drone Logic (2013) — to drum & bass, in its evocative harmonies, and above all in those fascinating sound textures that magnify the proposal — the sound of the piano breaking down live on new-faith opening sets the tone. A beautiful and dense saudade that this album inspired by his musical loves for Portishead (on Near Perfect) and early Aphex Twin albums (on spiderthe elegiac Chaos Energy and the title song), which makes you want to dream as much as you want to dance. Colleagues Manni Dee, HTRK, Sherelle, Kelly Lee Owens, Australian techno revelation HAAi (the voice of wall of sleep) and Montrealer Marie Davidson all contributed to this success.
