[Critique] “Turbulence and Pulse”, Asher Gamedze

Two years after being noticed thanks to Dialectic Soulhis first album as a leader, the South African drummer, composer and activist Asher Gamedze reunites his quartet once again – Robin Fassie on trumpet, Thembinkosi Mavimbela on bass and Buddy Wells who, on tenor sax, will mark the entire album from the long and complex Wynter Time – for this Turbulence and Pulse spiritual and committed. “Time in music is a metaphor for thinking about time in history and the way it moves”, says Gamedze to sum up the spirit of this double album in which we dive while losing the notion of time, the polyrhythms of the percussionist guiding the orchestra through these elastic avant-jazz grooves reminiscent of the more introspective moments of the work of a Mingus — precious, this half-word conversation between Mavimbela’s bass and Wells’ sax while the bells on If It Rains. To Pursue Truth. Despite its title, the album is anything but turbulent; more accessible than the previous one, but just as nourishing for the soul.
