[Critique] «Tragedy», Laroie | The duty

Gab Godon, alias Laroie, is certainly one of the most promising pop music artists of the moment in Quebec, and perhaps even in Canada. The Montreal singer-songwriter offers an impeccable third EP, where her voice drunk and bewitching is gracefully dressed in electronic melodies. The six songs of Tragedy, for which she also finds her faithful collaborators Gene Tellem, Gabriel Rei and Robert Robert, thus attest to a striking musical personality that continues to assert itself. To do this, Laroie does not hesitate to appropriate the aesthetic codes, both in substance and in form, of the years 1990-2000. Friend or Loverfor example, is the title par excellence that recalls the R&B trend embraced by the pop star of the time, while the butterfly wings on the cover evoke the iconic Britney Spears or Mariah Carey — those who know, know… The lyrics reveal the sensual momentum, empowering and emancipator who sets Laroie in motion, just like his listeners.
